MECON has been committed towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and has been engaged in rural/community development activities since the 60’s. In order to fulfill the objectives of CSR, a dedicated group was formed by MECON way back in 1976 under the name “Community Development Committee (CDC)”.
MECON is carrying out a number of activities relating to community development for upliftment and welfare of SCs, STs, OBCs, minorties and weaker sections of the society in slum areas/backward areas of Ranchi and nearby villages of Ranchi & Khunti districts.
The major activities/work undertaken by MECON Community Development Committee during the 1st Qtr.,
2008-09 are as follows :
a) Community education scheme
Under this scheme, at present there are twelve (12) nos. primary educational centers running successfully. Presently, the total numbers of students in all these centers are around four hundred (400). Each center has a dedicated teacher, and he/she is given a monthly honorarium amount.
b) Resource generation scheme
Under this scheme, at present there are eight (8) nos. resource generation centers (stitching centers) running successfully. Presently, the total numbers of students in all these centers are around one hundred fifty (150). Each center has a dedicated teacher, and she is given a monthly honorarium amount.
c) Vocational training scheme
Vocational Training Institute, Shyamali Colony, Ranchi is conducting programmes related to Radio & TV technician, Electrical technician, Welding technology, Computer Applications and Yoga. Students trained in the above vocational courses have found gainful employment, as also some have opened their own establishments.
d) Community health programme
Under community health programme, general health/medical check-up camp was organised at Jaganathpur
(A slum area in Ranchi), where about 415 patients were covered.
HIV/AIDS awareness programme was also organised at Jaganathpur where around 40 participants were present.
e) Scheme for aiding the handicapped/disabled people
Cheshire Home, Bariatu, Ranchi is a home for the disabled persons, located in the vicinity of Ranchi. MECON has adopted Cheshire Home since early 70s and the CMD of MECON is the President of Cheshire Home.
During the 1st Qtr., 2008-09, water proofing works on RCC roof of Boy’s Hostel has been completed.
f) Safe drinking water projects
Under, safe drinking water projects, water tankers are being regularly provided for supply of drinking water in remote areas, wherever the scarcity of water is acute, in association with Ranchi Municipal Corporation, Ranchi.
g) Afforestation programme
Under afforestation programme, saplings of fruits and other variety of trees are being distributed to the villages.
The requirement of saplings has been obtained from the villages and the procurement activity is under progress.
h) Other welfare activites
- Providing aid to the following schools,
- Birsa Siksha Niketan, Jaganathpur, Ranchi
- Ideal Public School, Neori, Vikas, Ranchi
- Iqbal Academy, Resaldar Nagar, Ranchi
- P.N. Middle School, Hinoo, Ranchi
Survey of the schools was done & their requirement was assessed.
Ispat Library, a reading room-cum-library in Shyamali Colony is run to provide facilities for MECON-SAIL employees as well as local senior citizens with all newspapers, magazines and literature books in various languages. |
